Becoming a Coach
The Australian Rugby Union, in consultation with the NTRU Unions is responsible for course content and accreditation. Coaching programs can be divided into two categories:
Accreditation Courses
- Smart Rugby (2 year qualification) this is a requirement for coaches at all levels and deals with safety and risk management issues relating to rugby.
- Level One is the basic coaching level required for senior rugby
- Level Two is an advanced coaching qualification. Clubs need to have at least one Level Two certified coach.
- Level Three is a requirement to coach at an elite or representative level
- Certificate Courses (non-accredited);
- Foundation Course
- Coaching Kids Rugby
Accreditation courses are registered with the Australian Sports Commission and coaches have a 'licence' for four (4) years. After that time the coach must either re-accredit or complete a higher level of coaching accreditation.
The NTRU Each run courses annually in Darwin usually in February or March.
If you are interested in coaching and are affiliated with a club, they will often cover coaching course costs.
