2010 Walla Rugby Championships
The annual PowerWater Walla Rugby Championships comprise four separate Gala Days held around the Territory. Each Gala Day is contested by a number of the Region’s local Primary Schools, and is conducted by Northern Territory Rugby Union (NTRU) development staff with the assistance of local volunteers and clubs. Although fun and fitness are the main goals for the days, a winning school is named for each event. See below for the 2010 winners and a report from each Region.
· Katherine Region (Monday 22nd November 2010)- Katherine South and MacFarlane Primary Co-Champions
· Southern Region (Wednesday 24th November 2010)- Humpty Doo Primary Champions
· Metro Region (Friday 26th November 2010)- Leanyer Primary Champions
· Alice Springs Region (Monday 29th November 2010)- Braitling Primary and OLSH Co-Champions.
22nd November Katherine Region
MacFarlane Primary and Katherine South Co-Champions of Katherine PowerWater Walla Rugby Gala Day
MacFarlane and Katherine South Primary Schools were yesterday named the region’s best Walla Rugby Schools at the PowerWater Walla Rugby Championships, held at Katherine’s Sport & Recreation Club. The Katherine event was the first of four championships played across four region’s through-out the Territory.
Approximately 90 Primary School students from eight teams participated in the Katherine Championships, with MacFarlane Primary and Katherine South the day’s top performers.
Junior Division- Years 3/4
Division Final- MacFarlane Primary 2 defeated Katherine South (score 15-5)
3rd Place Game- MacFarlane Primary 1 drew with MacFarlane Primary 3 (score 5-5)
Senior Division- Years 5/6
Division Final- Katherine South defeated Pine Creek (score 15-0)
3rd Place Game- MacFarlane Primary 1 defeated MacFarlane Primary 2 (score 10-5)

24th November Southern Region
Humpty Doo Primary School Walla Rugby Champions of Southern Region
Humpty Doo Primary School edged out Bakewell Primary School for the PowerWater Southern Region Walla Rugby Championship, held yesterday at Fred’s Pass Reserve in Humpty Doo. The second of four PowerWater Walla Rugby Regional Championships was very tightly contested, with the winning school decided by the final play of the day’s final match.
After splitting the points from the Junior Division (years 3/4) as a result of a drawn Final, Bakewell and Humpty Doo schools met again in the Senior Division (years 5/6) Final, with the winner to determine the Regional Champion. Bakewell held a 10-0 lead after half-time and appeared set for a Championship win, however Humpty Doo responded in the second half with two early tries. The scores remained tied until the final play of the match, which saw a Humpty Doo player touch score in the right corner to seal the Final and Regional Championship for his school. Bees Creek School were also highly competitive throughout the day, placing 3rd in each division.

26th November Metro Region
Leanyer Primary School Walla Rugby Champions of Metro Region
Leanyer Primary have been rewarded for high participation and consistent performances, winning the Metro Region’s PowerWater Walla Rugby Championship at Austar Park today. Alawa and Nakara Primary School’s finished in equal 2nd place, winning the Senior (years 5/6) and Junior (years 3/4) divisions respectively.
The day’s competition was notable for the closeness of competition. Five out 16 pool matches were drawn and five others were decided by a single try.
Alawa Primary defeated Leanyer Yellow in a tightly contested Senior Final. Leanyer Blue defeated Ludmila Primary in a scrappy 3rd place match, a result which provided their school the two competition points which proved decisive to their Championship win.
Nakara Primary overcame a fatigued Ludmila Primary in the Junior Final, by a score of 20-10. Due to a shortage of students, a number of Junior Ludmila players also played each Senior match for their school. Nakara’s other Junior team finished third in the division.

30th November Alice Springs Region
OLSH and Braitling Primary Schools Co-Champions of Alice Springs PowerWater Walla Rugby Day
In the final, and largest, of the 2010 Powerwater Walla Rugby Regional Championships, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) and Braitling Primary Schools were yesterday named Co-Champions at Anzac Oval. This event, staged for the first time in Alice Springs, featured more than 150 students from 13 teams representing five schools. Tournament organisers were extremely pleased by the enthusiasm local school students showed for Walla Rugby and will look to build upon this event’s success in 2011, with further rugby development activities planned for the region.
OLSH dominated the Region’s Junior division (yrs 3/4), entering three teams and providing both teams for the division final. This match was won by OLSH 3 over OLSH 1, by a score of 15-10. Bradshaw Primary defeated Braitling Primary 5-0 in the 3rd place match of the Junior division.
The teams for the Senior Final and 3rd place matches were so evenly matched that scores were locked at full-time of both matches. Braitling were named the division’s 3rd placed team by virtue of winning a tiebreaker (1st try-scorer) against Bradshaw. Similarly, the Senior Final could not produce a result after regulation and an extra period. Larapinta were named the division’s Premiers, holding the tiebreaker over Braitling Primary 2 as the game’s 1st try-scorer.
